The Beautiful Upset (S2): WK4 - FRI

DON'T BE AFRAID; JUST BELIEVE
Mark 5:38–42 (NLT) “When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw much commotion and weeping and wailing. 39 He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” 40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying. 41 Holding her hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means “Little girl, get up!” 42 And the girl, who was twelve years old, immediately stood up and walked around! They were overwhelmed and totally amazed.”

While Jesus was still speaking to the healed woman, messengers arrived from Jairus’ house with devastating news: "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher any longer?"

Can you imagine the wave of panic, grief, and regret that washed over Jairus? If Jesus hadn't stopped to talk to that woman in the crowd, maybe they would have made it in time. Now it was over. Game lost. Hope extinct. Jesus ignores the messengers' words, turns to the grief-stricken father, and gives one of the most powerful commands in Scripture: "Don't be afraid; just believe."

When they arrive at the house, the professional mourners are already wailing. Jesus tells them the child is only sleeping, and they mock Him openly. Jesus puts the doubters outside, takes the girl's parents and His inner circle into the room, takes the dead child by the hand, and says, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!"

Instantly, the twelve-year-old girl stands up and walks around, leaving everyone completely astonished. This is the beautiful upset that prefigures the cross and resurrection: Jesus speaks to death as if it were merely sleep. What human beings classify as final, Jesus treats as a temporary state that submits to His voice.

When every circumstance screams that a situation is dead, a marriage, a dream, a career, a spiritual life, Jesus calls us to look past the mourners and trust His voice. He is the Lord of life, and His power doesn't stop at the grave.

What area in your life feels "dead and buried," and how can you hold onto Jesus' words to "not be afraid, just believe" today?

  1. What situation in your life feels so hopeless that you are tempted to say, "Why bother God with this anymore?"
  2. How can you practice tuning out the "mocking crowds" of fear and doubt so you can hear Jesus' voice clearly?
  3. What does it mean for you practically to choose faith over fear when your circumstances look impossible?
