The Beautiful Upset (S2): WK4 - WED
SITTING, CLOTHED, AND IN HIS RIGHT MIND
Mark 5:14–20 (NLT) “The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. 15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. 16 Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs. 17 And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” 20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns[a] of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.”
When the herdsmen run into town and report what happened, the whole community rushes out to see for themselves. Expecting to find a dangerous, screaming lunatic, they find something that shocks them even more: the man is sitting calmly, wearing clothes, and completely in his right mind at the feet of Jesus.
How did the town respond to this breathtaking miracle? Mark says they were seized with fear and begged Jesus to leave their region. Why? Because true transformation is disruptive. They preferred a predictable, manageable tragedy (a madman in the tombs and a stable livestock market) over the unpredictable, sovereign authority of a King who disrupts economic comfort and changes lives. The restored man, however, longs to get into the boat and stay with Jesus forever. Who could blame him? But Jesus gives him a different mission: "Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
Jesus turns an isolated outcast into the very first missionary to the pagan Decapolis region. He doesn't send a seasoned theologian or a polished religious leader; He sends a guy whose only credential is that Jesus set him free. You don't need a seminary degree or a flawless past to be used by God. You just need a story of how His mercy met you in your brokenness and turned your life right-side up.

- Why do you think people are sometimes more comfortable with familiar chaos than with the radical, disruptive change Jesus brings?
- What is the simple core of your own story—how has Jesus met you with mercy and brought peace to your mind?
- Who in your immediate circle (family, coworkers, neighbors) needs to hear what the Lord has done for you?
